When I harvested my first deer. I was on stand next to my dad, we were waiting for the dogs to jump a deer and hopefully run it our way. The dogs jumped and the deer decided to go a different way. As we normally do, we stayed on stand in hopes that the deer would turn and come towards us. About 30 minutes after the dogs went out of hearing, a truck travelling down the road we had parked on blew its horn. I turned and looked back towards the road which was about 200 yards away and saw a deer running towards me. I did a double take and realized it was a buck. I got real excited and started remembering everything my dad had taught me. As the 6pt was about 40 yards from me, running from my right to my left, I took my shotgun and raised it to my shoulder. I aimed just in front of his shoulder and fired, instinct took over and I fired three more shots. On the second shot his back-end went to the ground, on the third shot a sapling between me and him broke off and fell over, on my fourth and final shot, the buck went into a cane break and never emerged on the other side. My dad came over and asked me where the deer went. I showed him and he told me to watch the other side while he went in where the deer did. He found it dead and told me to come drag my deer. I was so excited, I propped my shotgun against a tree and forgot about it until after we had loaded the deer in the truck and was about to leave for the skinning shed at the camp. I was shooting a Remington 870 20ga, I had it loaded alternately with buckshot, slug, buckshot, slug, buckshot. Other members of our group showed up and started asking my dad about how he shot it and where it came from and all the normal questions and information that deer hunters like to hear. When my dad told them it was not him, but me that had shot. They asked if I had been using his gun (he was shooting a Browning Auto5). He told them no that I shot the deer with the 20ga pump. They didn't believe it, because it sounded like an automatic. They were really surprised when we skinned it out and determined I had hit it with three of the four shots.

Having to miss a whole year of hunting, Mar 2003-Feb 2004: Had Hunting nightmares all year long while in Kuwait

Trail cameras get moved heavily during the post-season and then again late summer and pre-season. Trying to find that elusive Big Un. Build or repair stands and feeders. Target practice, dream and fantasize about Big Bucks.

47year old widowed father of two boys. Air Traffic Controller with the FAA, 30 year veteran with the MS Army National Guard (joined at 17).

Started at about 7 or 8 sharing stand with my father while hunting with dogs in South Mississippi. Killed my first deer a 6pt at 13yoa with a Remington 870 20ga. Started stand and still hunting in the evenings after hunting with dogs at about 23. Eventually went to all stand/stalk hunting. My hunting partner is a childhood friend, we are both in the MSARNG and served in Operations Enduring/Iraqi Freedom. We built our 12'x36' camp and have it parked at our Club in Butler County, AL.

Shower every morning before hunt. Twist a wad of pine needles to get scent, then rub all-over clothes. The big ones are in the thick stuff or out-of-way places
