I have joined a new hunting club based here in Texas and we have added a 1000 acre tract in NE Texas to our holdings. I spent all weekend setting up a campsite and scouting for stand locations. Even in the 100 degree heat this is still my favorite part of having a deer lease. Spending hours in the woods just watching and listening and trying to find just the right spot to outsmart a big mature whitetail. Most of the hunters who will be visiting this tract are gun hunters and since I prefer bowhunting, I have to find places that can be used for both. I also try to pick a really good spot to put up stands and blinds that can accomodate a father and son team. I'll be going back with my 2 sons, 16 and 13 this weekend to find more stand locations. After being in west texas and old mexico for the last 10 years, it is quite refreshing to walk thru a river bottom that is loaded with large oaks and other hardwoods.
