I got up early Thursday morning and headed North with the travel trailer in tow. A friend and I went up to Columbus,GA for the ASA Classic tournament. We stayed at a Army Corps of Engineers campground in Phoenix City,AL, and drive back and forth from the shoot to the campground.
We arrived about 10 a.m. and after setting the camper up, headed to the shooting grounds. This particulair shoot is located at the Ft. Benning military base.
The Thursday shoot was a benefit shoot for the troops and went extremely well. I shot 4 up for the day and our team placed really well, although not in the top 3....I think we were 4th or 5th out of 60 teams.
Friday was the "Pro/Am" team shoot. I ended up 6 up for that day and my team took 1st on our range.....that was some nice spending money!
The actual tournament started Sat a.m. and I shot reasonably well, ended up 1 down for the day so I was pleased. Sunday was another story though....I shot an 8 to start, 12 after that and the 3rd target was a 10.....so I was even, this was good. The 4th target of the day was a tempting 14, which I somehow shot high and got a 5 on. Well.....being 6 down for the two day tournament, I knew for sure I was out of the money. Like a fool I decided to shoot at all 14's at that point.....hey, I figured I needed the practice for them anyways ;)
Needless to say, I did not win, but we all had a great time. The weather was almost unbearable, with heat index highs hivering around 115 each day. Coolers of ice water were going like money, and the troops were walking coolers of iced down towels around to cool folks off. The EMS hauled 13 people off of the ranges and a couple to the hospital.....all due to the heat.
I suppose I won't have to worry about the heat in Gainesville in February, last year we were heating the risers of our bows there ;)
