Outhouses . By Harold White
DATE: 09/25/2007 19:22:44 / MOOD: Neutral
Years ago while in colleage ,Part of my term paper was to write story or poem.As most people do they wait till last minute to write papers and stay up all nite writng !so be the case with me --only i had some help ,
In my spare time between classes -owned an archery shop --Caribou creek archery --Late at nite i could be found building arrows for last minute hunters .
One nite as i worked thinking of what i would write for my paper a hunter came by to pick up his arrows ,we talked well into the nite .moose ,sheep ,bears ,and caribou hunting ,The subject was turned to my cabin .Why i wonder ? After this hunter left i returned to my writing .4 cups of coffee later iam looking at a picture of the old out house at my homestead.
A singe holer with small seat for my children .Aged over the years ,many weeds grown over the walls .
I wrote this story . Many readers are to young to may be able to remember these out houses .Many will relate with me of this story and laugh and cry .
Outhouses ,By Harold White
Outhouses are very literate places ,a sancturay of true self .To gain knowledge from words of wit upon the walls .Or just add a few words of your own ....
Worldly scholars solve personal, domestic and foreign affairs upon this throne of great thought .Anatomically correct ,one size fits all .Most favored shopping for wish books at sears and robucks ,j.c.penny's .Expenses were of no cosequence.
With loose ,rusty-hinges , make shift locks ,to protect the innocent and modest of souls .Long lasting effects upon ones well being .gettig tipped over ,either halloween pranks ,earth quakes or just faulty floors .
Classic half moons on doors and walls are important for needed ventilation ,natural lightingand visibility....
Decorated ,painted and weather beaten ,used ,unused..now abandoned .
Many of the great outhouse races where won .1st,2nd,3rd palce.on either the home front or the anchorage fur rondy each a winner ,sourdoughs {his or hers }a like ,finds solitude and companionship dependeing on if it is a one or two holer .
The little blue bottle .M.O.M{milk of magnesia }Tells us of the exitment ,litigations and constipation .
Best rememberd by all ages in a special way .The long distance from the house .If the need was most urgent .The distance was miles .Scary shadows on moonlit nites .The encounter of large and small creatures of the nite .Each real to evey one concerded ,
A reminder of a battle of self -control .The bed is so warm and the seat is ever so cold ! long dark nights ,-40 below .Brings the question --can this matter wiat untill morning ?
Best remembered in anger that the last piece of toilet paper ,ever so small .the last two pages of a mystery novel missing
Even the lonely yell from the distance "There is NO PAPER at all"

Which would you choose ?
DATE: 09/25/2007 18:44:34 / MOOD: Neutral
I found this writeing in some of my collection of papers .The author is unknown .
Picture in your mind what the author is saying.
A hungry wolf is looking at a big dog in a yard . The dog has a nice house ,a full bowl and a big water trough. The dog tells the wolf he can have all this weath and security, too, All he has to do is wear this chain .The last frame of picture wolf is walking into woods .
I have to respect that wolf ,He may be hungry and tried ,But he is freeand intends to stay that way .he may be hunted and hated by the "masters of the lands "But he will never be on that chain with the stupid dog .he is smart enough to know that bthe "masters" can and will deal with the dog any time and any manner they choose.
When it comes our time to choose between being the wolf or the dog on the chain ,I think ill choose the role of the wolf .

End of an era
DATE: 09/21/2007 21:00:55 / MOOD: Neutral
I found my self this year spending more time a my cabin than most years .So many memories there .Many friends made and lost {death }I hunted with my son for one week .we seen so many moose ,sheep and caribou .Only thing i can say is my freezer is still empty. Hunting is not always just to go and fill a tag .I find its time to reflect on the beauty of nature ,Time well spend with son .improve my camera skills
I put my son on a moose at 35 yds .He was ready and i stopped him .2 hours of crawling thur moose poop, water and blueberries .I said no ! the time was late ,too far from camp ,lack of water and warm cloths to spend nite out in the fall weather.
My son learned values of hunting with the touch of my hand on his shoulder ----these are priceless moments
My cabin is to be torn down this spring .After an era of many memories .Iam not sad .I will get to build a new one and spend many months building a new cabin to share with all my freinds --even freinds {hopefully from here on deer101}

new way to take care of squrriels
DATE: 09/14/2007 16:24:31 / MOOD: Neutral
I have had squrriel problems from the day i build my cabin 1970 ! Ive tried just about every thing i can think of .
First i tried to live trap them .Just to be a civil human being .liveing and let live --Wrong! i would trans port them miles away and dump them in new area .-I swear to God ,they would stop at every bar and envite all thier new drinking buddies to follow him home to stay !
Next i tried to trap and shot them --good stew pot fill at times ! Only after i killed one . 50 of their kin folks would come for furneral--And stay !
Iam at the end of my rope here .I really dont know what to do ?
So the other day i was talking to my friend a Preacher .I asked him how i could fix this problem with squrriels at my cabin !
Ben bowed his head in peacefull grace ---looking back at me eye to eye ,Harold You need to invite those squrriels to church ! love them ! Help them ! Teach them ! Baptize them into church .Care for them with open arms --Oh yea ! i say then what ?
You only see them on christmas and easter services !

Humor in the field
DATE: 09/09/2007 16:58:03 / MOOD: Excited
Humor in the firld can be found every Hunting season. Or other times we find ourselves enjoying the season changes.
I find my self walking down a trail back to camp .Nice walk after a long stalk on a moose .Darkness has over come my vision to see any more than just trail.
I hear a atv driveing to me Head lites bright .We meet !--{everyone here knows to have small amo bows ansd 27.5 draw lenght so story can be explained real quick!} What happened to your arrows the first guy says?
I use the new fob's by starrflight archery .So my arrows have no vanes .I keep the fob's in my pocket for when i need them .Put them on and shoot.easy for me in the field .
I look at this guy and then my arrows ,Damn!! i had a pro shop in my area build these arrows for top dollar and i get outr here and it rains .The sun shines .Heating up my black arrows{gold tips } really pi-sss me opff it ruins my hunt to not have vanes on my arrows .
The guy is in total agreement with me .Tells me to start building my own arrows .He would give the pro shop an ear full for me .
i like a good practical joke .I didnt know this guy so i just let him do the talking --you know open your mouth and put ypour foot in type guy !Walking away. Shook my head thinking --Here's your sign !

A look into the past
DATE: 08/26/2007 03:07:50 / MOOD: Neutral
I dont know if this story belongs here ? Each year at this time I feel the same way .Maybe its the hunting season .Maybe its time i spend with family .Maybe its time lost !
From the day i was born i followed my father with wonder of this new world .As time pasted, I would followed my father into the woods for the first day of deer season. Slowly he would teach me about every Leaf, Flower and Track .
Hunting was a way of life for us .Work was hard to come by and money even harder .Living on my grandfathers farm was the only help we had .You would never hear of state aid ,welfare .
My father and my uncle would hunt with long bows ,Hand made from choice woods . Hand fletched arrows . This would be the true meaning of hunting for me .Ive hunted with long bow for many years now with same feelings that i was taught at a very youing age .My skills would be honed by teachings of some of the best archers .We only canonly read about today.
I have been honored to hunt with men that have passed before me .Each leaving their archery skills in my hands to teach others .
I lost my uncle very early in my life .His teachings are with me every day .I miss him very much . All the rest of my mentors are missed equally .The one i miss the most is my father .As the day of his death falls again {aug 6th 2005} My feelings wander off into the past .I cant change the past or the future. only live for today .
I wrote a letter to my father. I wish to share with you .This letter will tell of a very good mentor of my life .
As you all may know i collect Nethercutt motorcycles and have the largest collection known today .My Dad was sick at the time i wrote this letter and to cheer him up. I restored one of my Nethercutts for a show piece .Then dedicated the restoration it to my father .
To my earthy Father
I deicate this restoration of this motorcycle to you .Restored with knowledge learned from you in my youth .With guidence from you .To be anble to seek knowledge ,find wisdom .Forever know beauty in all works .
I did find out the hard way "The pathway to Hell is paved with good intenions " Only after long troubled years of searching for what ever ! I never found it ! Because it wasnt there to start with .The one visit i had with you Last year .You showed me the way back from Hell--- Was only through Humilty !
So your years of teaching me were remembered .You did touch my heart as a father would dream of for his son .Not to late to finish this project Or to find each other in Christ our Lord .
We can smile a little Thinking of the Cushman three wheeler .The dreams of a young mans first motorcycle. A fathers dream of doing something together with his son .Some how we both seen something of beauty in this project .That no one else could see .
As we Both take this trip back in time .We remember all the good things .We cry a little ,Laugh a lot ,Being ever so happy. That all things work out With time .To guide us would only be Faith,Hope and love .Love being the greatest of all.
We both would have never guessed .Our lives were so close from day one of my brith .Our lives intwined us .ever so close.Yet so far ! Strangers at arms length,Each knowing so much ,Not seeing the truth that keeps us together .
Two totaly diffrent people. Father and son .Each trying not to let the other conquer the other .Wanting to be each their own person .Yet not seeing the truth that keeps us together .Each not wanting to show feelings of Love,Honor,Respect. Fearing that we would hurt each others feelings in some small way .Somewhere in time .Iknow that i failed .Only we together found out our Pride was our down fall.
It wasnt till we both accepted the total love of our Heavenly Father .We would learn that he would teach us both where we were wrong in many ways
Ive Learned more in the jaws of death .Than on my knees .Sometimes the hard way is better learned. There is a greater calling for us . These lessons are to strengthen our lives .Helping us to be able to face this calling. The punshment for our transgretions where many yeaqrs of wandering. Unknowing .Seeking the right hand of God .Too many year lost forever .Only today found .We greet each other with open arms .Imbrace each other ,Hearts warmed over with feelings of love for each other .
We must remember ! That we are not measured by "How much we love !" Only by "How much we are loved by others !"
Yor loveing son, Harold

do you feel your tree stand is tall enough?
DATE: 08/25/2007 03:01:57 / MOOD: Excited
For a number of years each spring i used to bait bears .In alaska you can bait black bears only. Not grizzlies. {They will and do come intop bait stands} I found a new call by Wayne Carlton i use now . I can hunt longer into season ,Baiting has an open season with a very short time limit .
Many of my freinds still bait black bears .I hear from them after spring season for all the good facts and areas they seen nice bears .Grizzlies also !
One afternoon i recived a phone call from and good freind to come down to pro shop he had video of his black bear hunt on tape ----Coool!
I go to town to meet my freind .there are a number of others there also .Good to see old freinds after along winter .
We set up vcr and tv for veiwing .The hunt was on a small river north of my home .A good stream for salmon fishing ---You guessed it --bears too! .The bait was old donuts ,Dog food.Honey wax .In a 35 gal barrel .On a hot day would smell good to a bear .The bears had been hitting the bait hard around 5 pm each night .My freind talked another freind {scared of bears period! }to film from tree stand about 10 foot off the ground .
The opening of tape shows tree stand and trip into area .My freind is telling the other that it is safe to be in tree stand ---tHe was trying to convince the other into at least staying with him .{i know from years of hunting with him --He is deadly afraid of bears } .He was convinced by being able to carry a 416 rigby rifle for back up ---over gunned or under bowed ? take your pick .
They fill the bait can .Climb up the tree to a pallet style platform .You can hear the wood creak and moan .Not as must as the two friends trying to climb the tree .
They had been in tree about 30 minutes Then in comes a small bear .Real jumpy ,looking around {small bears wanting feed are jumpy around areas therre are big bears} Big bear seat little bears
You can hear my freind name the bear, boo boo ! Great film shots of this bear trying to get to bait food .Just as fast as he came in .The bear runs off .
Next bear comes in a little bigger .Brave ! Only still watching over his back gets his fill and runs off also . Next bear comes in nice black bear ,Good hide ,no rubbs, About a 4 year old boar .Bear starts to feed moves into shooting position. The arrow finds the target .Great shot ! The camera is going and following the bear running off into woods .
Right into the jaws of a large grizzly bear The grizzly Kills the blackbear . Then moves into bait station .All on film !
Heres the part that keeps you on the edge of your seat The bait can is 5 ft off the ground .The bear on all four feet can stick his head into the barrel .The camera is still running .you can hear the saftey of rifle snap off say --You hear a small sqeeky voice say ! I dont think the tree stand is high enough!
The grizzly wonders off into the brush with the black bear he has claimed . Draging it off to feed on some where else .
Once the bear is out of sight you hear the camera being shut off --They left PDQ.
We watched the film over and over a few times. We all did agree the tree stand was to close to the ground. The size of the grizzly was about 9-10 ft .This bear could have easly stood up to eye both the guys in the stand. At that point you have to ask yourself is the tree stand high enough ? or how much t-p you will need to clean up your pants ?

Off season adventures
DATE: 08/20/2007 06:42:27 / MOOD: Neutral
Early fall is a slow time just before moose season .I try to find ways to get out to look around .Check out old haunts for moose .
One area i go to every year i find fossils ,Pan a little gold .It is good to just be out doors .Most the fossils i find are in high mountain tops .Valley's leading down to main river. While iam up on top looking for fossils i do get to watch the sheep population .Comeing back down to see areas better from on top that moose hide in .
Very nice family fun for a day trip .My boys and wife enjoy this also .We pack up a lunch.leave town early morning with our atv's loaded on trailer
Where we go is about 20 miles from our cabin. We plan to drive into our fossil beds to find fossils .With diffrent stops along the way for pictures. Mostly we find are clams ,snails .seashells .There are fish and mammals we cant keep .All the mamals i do know of . Are saber tooth tigers fossils .i have found fish ,and dinosaurs .
I have picture of saber tooth tiger skull i found once .State decided they wanted it and took it .I no longer tell them where i find my fossils .I take pictures and leave where i found them.
I find nautus's. Which is a snail that propells itself with water blasts ,These have been fossilize for many years . When you find one it shines with a golden color .
Over the years ive found many clams --not shells --clams fossilized so perfectlly perserved .You would think you could steam them and open them to eat .
I find amber .A clear form of tree sap/rock that has insects incased .
We find ourselfs back to river and a little gold paning. We dont find much gold here just enought to pay for fuel for this trip .some times we find moose sheds ,sheep horns .so our day is topped off with fishing .We build a camp fire. Grill our fish for a late nite meal . We normally drive out after dark to complete our day.
The last few years now i find myself hiking higher to top of mountain where iam finding salt licks where animals are gathering at times of the year .Around these licks i find stone blinds build by native hunters years ago .Just last year i found a number of agate broad heads .The closest native village is 100 miles away .I question that they traveled this far for sheep and caribou. Only if i find these broad heads .Some one was here ! I keep this spot selfishly to my self not wanting to share .In fear that some law will keep me from going here .
Find a good area that you can explore with family .The time spend with them is priceless !
