Couple of years ago went on my first historical trek into the Ouachita National Forest. 18th century longhunter clothing and equipment, flintlock (unloaded because it wasn't a hunting season), knife and tomahawk. Found a likely place to bed down for the night, built a fire with flint & steel fixed a quick supper, put the fire out and bedded down for the night. About 2:00 in the morning something woke me up. I could hear something shuffling and snuffing pretty close behind my head. Laid still for a bit trying to figure out what it was and then it moved close enough for me to smell...it was a bear. Decision time, jump up and yell to scare it off, but wait, it was spring and this could have been a sow with cubs...decision, lay still and play dead. The bear hung around for about 20 minutes trying to figure out what I was...got to admit I was scared...reached out to touch my knife and hawk laying beside me...was I going to have to fight this bear? Finally the bear wandered away without ever getting any closer than about 3 feet from me. For some reason couldn't sleep the rest of the night...lol...first light I gathered my gear and high tailed it out of the woods. Great night in the woods!
