CLUE# 2 for the Contest......

Mineral licks are meant to augment the mineral and vitamin content in the natural diet of deer. Licks need to be placed in appropriate locations and in sufficient numbers to ensure that all animals have adequate access. When establishing new mineral stations you may need to establish several and then select the most active to be continued until the desired number of licks is reached, which is one lick per 30-50 acres for free ranging deer. Place licks near secluded well-traveled areas and bedding locations. Old scrapes work extremely well.

Once you've found a good location, clear debris from a 3 foot circle, chop the dirt to a depth of 3-6 inches, pour 8 to 10 pounds of mineral into the loose soil and blend it in with the dirt.  Sprinkle 1-2 pounds of mineral over the top.  You've just created a Whitetail mineral lick.  Hint: Deer seem to prefer clay based soils for licks.  If all you have are sandy or looser soils, don't chop as deep.  Now you're ready to get the cameras up and start picking out those big bucks!
