I need some help with a story for a contest .ive wrote many here and want to use one for my story to be told in public for this contest .

This journal is special to me for all the right resons .

I have been on vaction all the month of june in washington .My boys and i share the same month for our b-days .

Plus it is always good to see all my grandkids for a good spoiling {wink/wink }

THis year was diffrent i spent 2 days in hospital with heart trouble .My knees are acting up from years of abuse climbing high mtns after the great dall sheep .

I bought my sons a rokon and spend a few nites with them traveling to get it in portland .Good quality time long needed .

My youngest son took me fishing ,the heat was so bad heat stoke was going to take over .I tryied so hard to fish with my son and show him i wanted to be with him.All i could hear in my head was "Your going to miss this" "Your going to want this back "

Each day ia a gift ! that why we can it the present .opemn that present every day and enjoy it It is a true bleesing to be able to see others enjoy presents with you . 

Ive  never ever been lost ! Confused for a few day .But never lost .

Years ago Ben east was a well known writer for outdoors life Mr East wrote many stories of survial .Ive read his writings over and over in my life .Robert Service Another well know writer wrote a story --To build a fire ! sounds easy ?

Over the many yerars ive lived here in alaska i make it a point to study maps of areas i wish to explore .Makeing myself remember many notable points that could guide me back to camp or safety.I write this story tonite to maybe remind others how easy it is to get lost with out being prepared .

My freind and his family were out last week end on a bear hunting trip .the atv broke down away from camp .the younger boys strted walking back to main camp and got lost .my freind looked all night for his boys ,Not knowning what had happened .Next morning with sun up the boys were found no worse for the wear. Cold ,wet and hungry .

Now !  Here is  the topic of this story ! What do you carry in your back pack ,pocket ,car or truck that would help you stay alive in any condition ?

As you read this please write as reply to this your ideas for all to share .only remember that what may be good tool for you may not be good for someone elses survial kit .

i first signed on here with deer 101 .I found a place i could share stories ,hopes and dreams .After my stoke last year i needed to open my heart and share in order to keep my life together .

Some of the memebers have seen the journals i wrote of my real past life ,heart felt and real .Some have said i have set the bar to high here fore others to share thier stories .Maybe feeling belittled in some way .please keep witeing ypour journals every one enjoys reading about adventures from every where around the world .

This year ive set my plans for a very busy season .thinking i need to start to out fitt again .A job i surly enjoyed.I need to remain active .

I want to tell every one iam not stoppoing here with this journal .iam going out this year to enjoy new adventures for me to write about.

Drop me a line every now and then to keep in touch with me .Every day i get up a 6 am coffee in hand standing on my front porch ,grasping the new born day.Liveing each day as it were my last .every one should do this .Each day is a present --Please open it .   

Ive been out all this end of winter season to see nothing but snow .Great snowmobile rideing ! Varmit hunting has been so-so .

After last week end i can see where snow is leaving .The green of grass will take its place .Spring is in the air .I did notice that late winter temps in day time are 50 degrees to hot to ride .At nite dropping to 30 degrees .

many moose are to be seen in low lands. I made mental notes of the areas and how many .looking for cows carrying new borns.The moose did winter very well . Did see one small bull with his antlers still in place ,Odd for this time of year .Sure hope i find a grizzly this year to help keep moose calves alive longer .Sheep on mountain sides eating what was left from wind blown snow  ,Ewes are heavy with lambs .A few rams can be seen .

Rabbits are in peak cycle this year and lynx can be seen at nite along with coyotes .Of course my running battle with squrriels continues into another year .For 40 years i can't seem to win this war .It is fun trying !

Cabins have wintered good the small log cabin has seen better  days. Dry rot has set in around botton logs.The big cabin is settleing more every year .My large log cabin is to be replaced this year with new cabin . So many plans! so little time ! 

There only 3 seasons to alaska .this winter ,next winter and last winter. Maybe next spring ill get more done .Hunting and fishing seem so important every year .Cant miss any of those seasons .

The snow is gone here at my home in wasilla ,You can see the dry grass from last year ,The yearly mud is showing up right on time .The driveway is a solid mass of mud for the "mean season" .

I find myself looking out my window each day longing for the first signs of spring --Robins comeing home to nest .The blue egg shells in yard tell of new nest of baby birds close by .The large fromation of  geese in sky ways headed north again as it is each season.Welcome sight each year are the swans landing on half frozen ponds .Muskrats busy with all their push ups. trying hard to keep up with water fowl stealing the cache of reeds and grasses for their new nests .

What is it about spring that each and every one finds that keeps you wishing its early return ? I would love to hear your stories here .

I couldnt help but think of this story after reading others stories about food --food for thought ?

Many years ago to many to put a number on .My family lived in the a remote area of alaska .When you made supply trip to town the list was well prepeared in advance . All things need for summer or just monthly supplies .

My wife could bake a german chocolate cake from scratch .this was a treat for all .I would go to glacier for ice {glacier ice is the coldest ice known }We would Break out the hand cranked ice cream machine .what a treat !

At this time i had a freind that i didnt see very often months would pass .But when he did show up we would have a kings dinner ,moose steaks bbq'ed, fresh garden greens and german chocolate cake with fresh made ice cream.

We lost touch with my freind for two years .One day we were thinking of my freind . We decided to have bbq.along with garden greens. Our thoughts all day were of my freind .My wife make her best german chocolate cake .fresh made ice cream .Our day was a merry day of family fun ,Rare day when you live remote.

Dinner was ready .The smell filled our home.Table was set .Dinner bell was rang. As we were saying grace .our thoughts and prayers were of our freind missed so much .

From the distance wind the sound of some one whisling a tune became closer. It was our freind .

So next time you think of your freinds lost in time ,not seen for years at a time cook a meal fit for a king with food you have havested ,grown in your garden .Chocolate from suppies saved just for days like this one .Bring your family close .enjoy all the times like these --and in hopes freinds will show up !     

We read and hear tell of people that  we hunted with ,Freinds ,Fathers,wifes ,mothers  ,sons and Daughters .

What name to you call your bow ? I dont mean the words you say when you miss that big buck or hog !This is a clean site here and children read these words also !

If you could name your bow what would it be ? Deer shooter  ?. Ole one arrow ? Maybe you name it after freind or family that gave it to you ? Maybe after a long ago passed away freind or family member that you shared good times in the field.

I can think of many diffrent times ive shared hunting stories with people that have been a great influence to my hunting skills .I look back in time to share with you many stories here on deer 101 .If you can read between the lines you can see the adventures .If you look under the adventures. You will find the stories They are written there for all time that passes after us. For all to share .

You now ask ! What name do you call my  bow ? Of all names i have called my bows The only true name i can say is their name " Trusted Freind"  If you think about this this freind is there all the time .never questions the time you get up to leave for tree stand .Doesnt complain about haveing to do camp chores and cooking.Always rides on back of atv or in bed of the truck .Never complains of weather  An unconditional freind .

Where do you find a freind like this one --very rare find in a life time dont you think ?

Winter finds me wanting to curl up next to the wood stove ,read a good book .I cant see myself living as a squrriel all winter sleeping the cold weather away .

I try to get out as much a possible .varmint hunting, snowmobling , ice fishing and Oh yes shed hunting !With all my winter gear in top shape. i can run off in on a minutes notice --Fist p-art odf winter i have all my chores done and its time to repair broken gear put in x-mas list for new gear .rifles are taken to gunsmith for seasonal repairs.mounting new   scopes .This year 2 new barrels for my favorite rifle and pistol. Hand loading becomes more and more the task of season .Ammo is getting so $$$$ spendy .

This year i need to relace my snow shoes .found an old moose hide after moose season for babich{lace made from hide soaked in lye }.Cutting lace into 1/4 inch strips can be boring  at best .Tandy leather made a small pocket model that works great for my needs and i carry one with me in my pack .never know when you may need lace to make rope .There are books tha teach you how to lace rope .Good knowledge to have if needed .

Each year i look for others things that i could /would use in the field to make camping easier .Back packing more fun .

My real season is almost in play now found 2 winter killed moose close to area i seen big grizzly after fisrt snow fall .He could be in area hungry after long winter so ill keep eye on these moose carcusses the next few months ,varmint hunting keeps me afield more and more each year .i learn so much for every animal .This let me know where moose are all season right up to hunting seasson --how many bears are working around my area .The dall sheep movement never go unoticed .I always watch them _-already seen a nice ram that could be my next ram.

Enjoy your free time in winter ,explore places you have never been . you will be surprized to how much you miss by just sitting around wood stove reading about adventures that some one has made and wrote book about --Hey! get out there and make your own adventures .This is where you find me all year round .

Iam leaveing this month fpor seattle / moses lake area .Would like to meet some of you here on Deer 101 while iam there .Any one in this area or areas close i can drive to please write me here . 

Ill be down south for 1 week .I have 2 new grand children to hold high ! --Cant wait to be there with wramer temps than -20 we have here ,Thought my son does want me to go snowmoblie rideing with him also .I guess it time to show my children how we ride in alaska ?
