I've held the future
DATE: 01/30/2008 22:42:29 / MOOD: Excited

When you become a father you see in the faces of your children the future...I now realize that as a grandfather that feeling is more intense when you hold your grandbaby and look into his face.  I have held the future in my arms...but I wonder what kind of future I will leave him the seeds of?

Have I taken the stands that I need to in order to insure his freedom?  Will he be able to own firearms as an adult?  Will he be able to enjoy the outdoors and hunting like I have?  Or have I sat complacently by and allowed these freedoms, these rights, to be chipped away, to be legislated into near oblivion?

It is a frightening and sobering thought that we may have remained silent too long.  Most everyone that frequents this site loves hunting and owns firearms.  What are we really doing to insure that the future generations will have the freedom to enjoy that same things that we do?

DATE: 01/21/2008 12:34:10 / MOOD: Excited

Hunting seasons are just about over here.  Too much stuff got in the way this year and didn't get to hunt but a couple of times.  Oh well, there's always next year.  Can't wait to get out and scout, hoping to get a new gun this year.  Gonna try some diffirent hunting next year too.

Anybody already making plans for next year's season?

Historical Trekking
DATE: 10/16/9770 12:00:50 / MOOD: Excited

Historical Trekking, also called experimental archaeology, is the hobby or practice of taking part in treks, hunts or practices using only the articles that would be available to you during your chosen period in history.  My personal time frame is 1730 - 1750 in the lower Mississippi Valley.  When I trek or hunt in period time frame I carry a .62 Tulle Fusil de Chasse smoothbore flintlock, at least two knives and a tomahawk, I am dressed in a proper 18th century shirt, either cloth or leather leggings, a breechclout and centerseam or puckered tow moccasins.  My supplies usually consist of nothing more than a single blanket, flint/steel/tinder for fire starting, jerky and parched corn. In addition to these items I have my shooting pouch which contains everything necessary to shoot clean and do minor repairs on my gun and clothing.

If you have never taken part in this hobby, give it a try sometime, it's both rewarding and fun.

First Hunt
DATE: 10/16/9491 12:00:44 / MOOD: Excited

It was a cold October morning...the sun was not up yet and I was a sleepy but excited 5 year old.  I had spent the night with grandma and grandpa, unable to sleep because grandpa was going to take me squirrel hunting in the morning.  Grandma got up early with us and fixed out breakfast and packed us a lunch.  On the way to the woods we stopped and picked up my great uncle jim.  Down winding roads and dirt paths that really couldn't be called roads we drove for what seemed like hours, now I realize that it was less than 30 minutes to the patch of woods that grandpa hunted.  Finally we got there and headed into the dark woods.  Not only was I hunting with the men, grandpa actually let me carry his .22 pump rifle while he carried his shotgun.  I didn't kill a squirrel on that first hunt, but the memory of that day is burned into my mind and heart forever.  Just a short time after that grandpa became ill and was unable to hunt.  Three years later, he passed away.  Even in his final days, he would still tell my uncles and other family members how he and jim had taken his "little dutchman" hunting.  I am now approaching the birth of my grandson and I hope to instill in him the love of the hunt that my grandpa passed to me.  Grandpa...your "little dutchman" is still hunting and he still misses you.

DATE: 10/16/1911 12:00:42 / MOOD: Neutral

Found this site in Nov. 2007....just curious at first....cool watching the bucks on cam1....then it changed...got to know some folks that are on here....got aquainted with stonycreek...started frequenting the chat room.  At first I laughed and thought wow, I'm a deer101 addict LOL.  The more I've visited here the more the folks have become like family.  Warm hearts, good advice and best of all laughter.

Cool having friends from all across the country.
